Rarely do we face a brief that requires so many post-production techniques (3D, motion tracking, rotoscoping, and scanning) and that also involves coordinating multiple teams simultaneously in Mexico City, Mumbai, and Madrid. We worked our tails off, but we also had a great time. Many thanks to PS21 for trusting us!

A sneak-peak into the making

Environment scanning

After shooting the still lifes, we scanned the entire environment to obtain a perfect 3D geometry of the different elements and be able to place them in the scene. Only then could we have absolute control over post-production.

Motion tracking

Next, we did motion tracking to synchronize the virtual camera with the movements of the BOLT.

Rotoscoping

Only when we had the virtual environment prepared, we began rotoscoping: carefully cutting out the filmed elements and integrating the animated illustrations.

3D and compositing

To make the result even more realistic, we generated some 3D elements to animate the textures and compose them in the environment.
